Don’t Quit LIFTING Just Because You Cannot Quit SMOKING

Yes we all know that smoking is unhealthy and it will definitely decrease the gains that you will get from you training session. But some people seem to think that it is NOT ADVISABLE to train when you are already smoking.

Now I myself don’t know where they are getting this information, but it is evident among smokers. I know someone who said he lifted before but says he doesn’t now because he smokes a pack a day already. I couldn’t seem to connect the dots there, am I missing something?

And so did Dennis Wolf and Markus Ruhl:

Lately I have answered a question in quora:

Can I still smoke if I exercise at the gym? Are there any downsides for smoking before or after exercising?

The question itself here indicates that smokers are generally anxious of starting a workout or any exercise regimen for the fear that it would be unhealthy to exert if they smoke – yes I know it’s not logical but you got to understand that longtime smokers who never exercised tend to lose breath early on in any exercise. This can be stressful for people – although I am not like that since I began lifting and martial arts even before I smoked.

Now here’s my answer to his question:

The effect of smoking on training depends on people. Smoking can be good since nicotine tends to elevate performance but the downside is that the tar will hinder O2 circulation which in turn will give you two steps forward and then 2 steps back. I personally experience decreased gains from the gym while smoking. But I couldn’t help it I smoke and I am addicted – until 3 months ago when I took up vaping and I am starting to gain weight again (not fat but lean mass).

I have answered a similar question BTW in this article:

Some people however don’t seem to be affected like my colleague, Arturo who can still deadlift 400s even while smoking immediately after lifting (and Markus and Dennis Wolf above).

But the thing is, don’t make smoking an excuse to NOT lift.

I have met many people who said that they used to lift, run, etc until they smoked – they seem to think that because they’re now hooked to cigarettes it is now unhealthy to exercise.

THEY COULDN’T BE MORE WRONG

We all know that smoking is unhealthy (although not DEADLY as the news and media tells you – especially what the Government tells you – why would you trust the Government?) but that is something that we hardly have control over (since you are already hooked) but what you CAN control now is starting to lift weights. Lifting weights will gain back the lifespan that you lost when you smoke and will somehow neutralize the negative effects of smoking.

The fact that you smoke makes it a necessity to lift weights

Although you should expect decreased performance and results, but you should just live to that until you decide to quit.

NOTE: It is advisable to catch your breath first if you plan to smoke after you lift. Yes I know that the nicotine rush is very satisfying after a hard day’s work but the increased respiratory rate that you have after lifting will make it easier for you to absorb more tar and carcinogens from your cigarettes. This will make your cigarettes two times as harmful as they normally are and will guarantee that you will see lesser gains. So catch your breath first and relax a little bit then once you’ve have established your normal breathing rate, now you can light it up!

BUT GOOD NEWS – now it has never been easier to quit because of the presence of vaping. Just give 40-50 bucks for a good performance set and once you start vaping you will spend less (if cigs are expensive in your country) and you will grow bored with regular cigarettes. Not to mention you will still get the nicotine kick that you got from analog tobacco but NO TAR! Remember that we all smoke for nicotine, but we die from TAR. Eat your eggs, A-Lifters!
