Old School Bodybuilding Tips to Reshape Your Physique

The golden era of bodybuilding produced such famous names as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dave Draper, and Larry Scott. Even though many will say that the fitness revolution in the United States began in the 1930s, it wasn’t until the 1950s when bodybuilding became recognized. Compared to today, bodybuilders who trained during that time didn’t have plenty of scientific evidence to back-up their workout regimens, which is why their experience was their most valuable possesion.

Anyone who takes a closer look at this era will encounter Vince Gironda, who was one of the biggest influencers of natural bodybuilding. He was the first one who employed the overload system, intensity training, palm grip, creative posing, and nutrition that relied primarily on healthy fats and protein. He was a big advocate of high-fat / high-protein diets and using natural supplements to help reach gym goals. Vince wasn’t afraid to try out new methods and workouts, and thanks to his experience we today know exactly what kind of nutrition will lead to an all-natural massive physique.

Building Mass: Vince’s Hormone Precursor Shake

Vince is the creator of the Hormone Precursor Diet, which is actually a very simple diet plan capable of producing highly anabolic, visible results in a very short amount of time. The goal of this diet is to keep your system in positive nitrogen balance, which is a pre-requirement for those looking to increase their muscle mass.

Today we know that protein is needed to build muscle, but it is also the key substance that builds bodily tissues. Since it makes up 15-20% of one’s bodyweight, this is the second most abundant building block of our bodies, next to water. Still, it is important to know how to activate protein synthesis, what kind of workout regimen to adopt, as well as how to amplify workout recovery.

Positive nitrogen balance is the optimal state for muscle growth, where the nitrogen intake is greater than nitrogen output. Vince’s Hormone Precursor Diet is the perfect way to achieve this, making this diet one of the ultimate old school training tips. The essential part of this diet is Vince’s Hormone Precursor Shake which is perfect for bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts to bulk up with, containing lots of protein and fat, required for muscle growth. This is the exact recipe:

– 12oz half and half
– 12 raw eggs
– 1/3 cup quality milk-and-egg protein powder
– 1 banana

As you can see, this shake requires you to take 12 raw eggs at once and Vince used this shake 1 to 3 times per day. However, taking in this amount of eggs shouldn’t be a problem since you are drinking them. If you are on a ketogenic diet you can skip the banana for a zero carb shake. In addition, there are numerous benefits to drinking raw eggs as well as why they should be the staple of your diet.

The Anabolic Properties of Raw Eggs

There are many reasons why you should consider adding raw eggs to your meals, especially if you’re looking for a quality source of protein for your muscle growth. After all, eggs are one of the most nutrient-dense foods available, as well as an amazing source of cholesterol. On the other hand, cholesterol provides essential building blocks for testosterone.

You are probably wondering if eating a couple dozen eggs can harm your health due to a high level of cholesterol, however this is a misconception. About 80-90% of cholesterol is made by your liver, and not from the foods you eat. There are medical evidence that back this up. For example, a recently conducted research study shows that a relatively high intake of dietary cholesterol that comes from eggs is not associated with an elevated risk of coronary heart disease.

Aside from cholesterol which influences your testosterone levels, eggs also offer plenty of other useful nutrients. They are an excellent source of vitamin B, needed for fat breakdown and muscle growth. There is also vitamin A, riboflavin, folate, vitamin E, vitamin D, iron, and phosphorus. Eggs are also packed with testosterone-boosting zinc.

If you’re worried that egg yolks are high in calories, you should know that the majority of those calories come from protein and healthy fatty acids. This also has an positive effect on testosterone, since the more saturated fats you eat compared to polyunsaturated fats, the higher your testosterone levels will be. This goes hand-in-hand with muscle building, keeping your testosterone high.

Liver Tablets: The Most Nutrient Dense Food on the Planet
Vince was also known for recommending liver tablets, which are still popular but not like in the golden age of bodybuilding. This is why many are considering liver tablets to be an old school supplement.

Liver tablets are an excellent source of protein, iron, and vitamin B12. However, they also contain cytochrome P-450, which is a protein enzyme that regulates steroid production and detoxification. One of the greatest benefits of using liver tablets is the energy and faster recovery they provide.

Bodybuilders and powerlifters have been using them for decades to help them with strength and energy, to reduce recovery times and fatigue, as well as to support liver function. On top of that, liver is an effective blood builder, which is important because blood is what delivers oxygen and nutrients to your working muscle.

Even though you can’t fully rely on liver tablets to be your only aid during workouts, you still should add them to your supplement program. In addition to your protein powder, liver tablets can make up for amino acids and other beneficial nutrients. Liver is in fact one of the most healthy foods on the planet, beating most fruits and vegetables in terms of nutrition.

Semen Retention: Locked and Loaded

Speaking of keeping your energy- and testosterone levels high, we come to another old school tip that has now been backed up by scientific evidence.

Semen retention is the practice of abstaining from ejaculation, which leads to higher testosterone and increased energy levels. In addition, semen is a complex mixture of calcium, phosphorus, lecithin, cholesterol, albumin, and nucleoproteins. What this means is that you’re losing all of those nutrients, which is why numerous professional athletes are abstaining from sex prior to important events. This is what former world heavyweight champion David Haye said about this topic:

“Find a lion that hasn’t had some food for a while, and you’ve got one dangerous cat. I don’t ejaculate for six weeks before the fight. No sex, no masturbation, no nothing. It releases too much tension. It releases a lot of minerals and nutrients that your body needs, and it releases them cheaply. Releasing weakens the knees and your legs. Find a lion that hasn’t had some food for a while, and you’ve got a dangerous cat. So there won’t bet a drip from me. Even in my sleep — if there are girls all over me in my dream, I say to them, ‘I’ve got a fight next week, I can’t do anything. I can’t do it.’ That’s control. I’ve been doing that since I was fifteen and its part and parcel of my preparation now. That’s why I am who I am today — it’s down to all those little sacrifices. Find me another boxer who makes that sacrifice, and you’ll find another champion.”

There are several physical and mental benefits to semen retention, such as increased energy, boosted immune system, mental clarity, and increased sex drive. It is easy to understand why athletes and bodybuilders decide to do this in order to maximize their potential and reach their goals. Keep in mind though that these benefits only last for a week or two and prolonged semen retention up to 2-3 months has actually been shown to affect testosterone levels negatively. So for long term, “Use it, or lose it!” applies.

Even though with all the massive amounts of scientific evidence on which supplements work and how to train to reach our fitness goals, it’s always best to rely on experience from people that had proven results. As one of the most popular personal trainers of its time, Vince Gironda certainly had a lot to say and many people listened because of his amazing results. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno, Larry Scot (the first Mr. Olympia), and Frank Zane (former Mr. Olympia) were the best examples of Vince’s philosophy. Indeed, we could all benefit from turning to old school methods for achieving the physique of our dreams.
