Are Humans Omnivores – What Should Humans Eat


We will now clear the confusion of so what must PEOPLE really eat? Should we eat purely protein and fats like on ketogenic diets? Must we eat mostly grains? Should we avoid eating vegetables and focus on meat instead?

Just to set the scope of this one – we did not consider here the diet of a stagnant person since as a humanbeing – you weren’t created to become immobile and stagnant; otherwise we should have been born without limbs like krang – and we will only exist in pure consciousness and intellect and basically be like plants; human PLANTS!

SO in all cases we must strive for physical activity – even if your artificial, corporate life makes it hard for you to do so. And the way to do that I guess will be up to you since only you can know what your schedule is like – and that is even if you don’t strive to lift weights at all; there are bunch of other physical activities you can do as a non-lifter to induce mobility.

So going back to our main topic about the “perfect diet” – yes there are what we call “specialized” diets; the likes of “Atkins”, “Vegan”, “Ovo-vegetarian”, “Pescetarian” ,etc. Those diets serve a specific purpose or belief; but basically when it comes to what types of food are WE supposed to eat just remember this statement below:

YOU ARE AN OMNIVORE

Yup, that’s the “drama to end all dramas” about diets and confusion about which type of foods must we eat.

As far as I know when animals are classified according to their natural consumption and way of feeding; you would arrive at 3 basic types of animals (according to that criteria):

1) The Carnivores

2) The Herbivores and…..

3) The Omnivores

Carnivores are those whose bodies require a majority consumption of  meat – if you feed a carnivore with 80% carbohydrates –  you can expect a dead (or a malnourished) carnivore within a matter of months or even weeks.

Carnivores are not that hard to spot; just look for canines and sharp teeth which is basically for the purpose of masticating meat and catching prey.

Do you happen to have sharp teeth that look like these:

I guess not, unless you happen to be a lycant or a vampire – in that case I don’t know if the Ironthumb system would work for you since our system is designed for humans –in that case, I am very sorry for the inconvenience.

So since we don’t belong to the carnivore class – then the vegan diehard folks must be right, we must be herbivores.

Herbivores have a diet consisting mostly of plants and well. . herbs, of course. Feeding hefty amount of meat to a herbivore would guarantee indigestion and a dead herbivore.

There are some people who argue that we are indeed herbivores like this guy:

– Let’s see about that: I challenge them to survive long years in the wild without any taking in meat at all not even insects. If they can then they can tell me that we are indeed herbivores.

Plus the evolving brain – the HUMAN BRAIN requires a more complex diet; requiring us to include animal meat into our diet.

Take a look at all of the scientific evidences stated in this article:

• “Comparative analyses of archaeological bone assemblages from Olduvai Gorge and Koobi Fora and of various modern bone assemblages with known taphonomic histories reveal direct evidence of early hominid butchering and marrow-processing activities” between 2 and 1.5 Myr ago.

• The Expensive-Tissue Hypothesis “suggests that the metabolic requirements of relatively large brains are offset by a corresponding reduction of the gut.”

No matter what is selecting for relatively large brains in humans and other primates, they cannot be achieved without a shift to a high-quality diet unless there is a rise in the metabolic rate. Therefore the incorporation of increasingly greater amounts of animal products into the diet was essential in the evolution of the large human brain.   Dr Eades discusses this at great length in Are we meat eaters or vegetarians? So we are OMNIVORES after all.

And guess what the perks of being an omnivore is?

FREEDON OF CHOICE AND VARIETY!!

Between enjoying that perk and limiting myself to either all meat or, NO MEAT diet; I guess I choose the former and enjoy the perk.

And what does that mean to all of our lifting folks out there? Well simply being human requires that we eat a wide variety of foods in our diet more so is being a bodybuilder.

You cannot live on meat alone, and you cannot live on LEAVES alone as well!

Yes there are diets that you can try on special occasions like a “cleansing” diet consisting only of vegetable juices of you’re sick, or a ketogenic diet consisting only of  meat and eggs and no carbs if you’re having a hard time losing fat (Keto gets thumbs up from the Ironthumb).

note: If you’re doing keto, increase your water intake and take some fiber to help with bowel movement.

But none of those diets must be taken permanently as a staple diet. The perfect diet for optimal energy and longetivity is the “complex” diet containing a good amount of carbohydrates, protein, dietary fats, vegetables, fruits, and micro and macro nutrients.

The QUALITY approach

What you need to do however is instead of eliminating an entire group of foods from your diet (like eliminating carbs or meat totally); you SHOULD instead strive to eat only “high quality” foods from each type of foods.

For example for meats: Strive to only choose “organic” meats – or meats that you are sure were actually FED grass and not injected with chemicals (as much as you can).  And if I were you I’d eat more beef and lamb than pork.

And with carbs you must avoid “bread” as much as possible and take instead rice as a staple. Personaly my diet consists of more than 65% rice. And about potatoes – try to get some sweet potatoes instead.

Another thing: Instead of buying cool aides; get yourself some carrot or tomato juice instead.

  1. I thought I would find valuable information when reading this article and noticed it was meant to serve as a good message but it was misguided in the wrong direction. You can live and should live on whole plant based foods. Meat and dairy products cause cancer, diabetes type 2 , heart disease and other chronic illnesses. Also, you can live on whole plant based foods and still be in great physical shape. Eating this way helps me run 6 miles daily. Whole plant based foods provides the best nutrition your body could ever use. I know most are wondering well where would I get my protein but believe it or not plants do provide protein. 🙂

  2. Although we think we are, and we act as if we are, human beings are not natural omnivores. When we kill animals to eat them, they end up killing us, because their flesh, which contains cholesterol and saturated fat, was never intended for human beings, who are natural herbivores.
    Sure, most of us are “behavioral omnivores”–that is, we eat meat, so that defines us as omnivorous. But our evolution and physiology are herbivorous, and ample science proves that when we choose to eat meat, that causes problems, from decreased energy and a need for more sleep up to increased risk for obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
    Old habits die hard, and it’s convenient for people who like to eat meat to think that there is evidence to support their belief that eating meat is “natural” or the cause of our evolution. For many years, I too, clung to the idea that meat and dairy were good for me; I realize now that I was probably comforted to have justification for my continued attachment to the traditions I grew up with.
    But in fact, top nutritional and anthropological scientists from the most reputable institutions imaginable say categorically that humans are natural herbivores, and that we will be healthier today if we stick with our herbivorous roots.

    1. We would be healthier today if people didn’t learn to use chemical additives in foods.

  3. When you look at the comparison between herbivores and humans, we compare much more closely to herbivores than meat eating animals. Humans are clearly not designed to digest and ingest meat.

    Meat-eaters: have claws
    Herbivores: no claws
    Humans: no claws

    Meat-eaters: have no skin pores and perspire through the tongue
    Herbivores: perspire through skin pores
    Humans: perspire through skin pores

    Meat-eaters: have sharp front teeth for tearing, with no flat molar teeth for grinding
    Herbivores: no sharp front teeth, but flat rear molars for grinding
    Humans: no sharp front teeth, but flat rear molars for grinding

    Meat-eaters: have intestinal tract that is only 3 times their body length so that rapidly decaying meat can pass through quickly
    Herbivores: have intestinal tract 10-12 times their body length.
    Humans: have intestinal tract 10-12 times their body length.

    Meat-eaters: have strong hydrochloric acid in stomach to digest meat
    Herbivores: have stomach acid that is 20 times weaker than that of a meat-eater
    Humans: have stomach acid that is 20 times weaker than that of a meat-eater

    Meat-eaters: salivary glands in mouth not needed to pre-digest grains and fruits.
    Herbivores: well-developed salivary glands which are necessary to pre-digest grains and fruits
    Humans: well-developed salivary glands, which are necessary to pre-digest, grains and fruits

    Meat-eaters: have acid saliva with no enzyme ptyalin to pre-digest grains
    Herbivores: have alkaline saliva with ptyalin to pre-digest grains
    Humans: have alkaline saliva with ptyalin to pre-digest grains

    Clearly if humans were meant to eat meat we wouldn’t have so many crucial ingestive/digestive similarities with animals that are herbivores.

      Clearly you might not have read some of the researches on the above article though, which proves that we we’re meant to NOT be herbivores , NEITHER carnivores but OMNIVORES….
